Getting Started

Fortress is free software for Windows machines to stop brute force passwords attempts.

This prevents brute force attacks slowing your machine down, keeps it safer and more secure.

You can download Fortress and start blocking failed password attempts on:

  • RDP
  • Exchange
  • MSSQL Server
  • MySQL Server
  • SSH

Fortress has these configuration options:

  • Ban duration
  • Number attempts before ban
  • Whitelist IPs, ranges and DNS names
  • Blacklist IPs, ranges and DNS names
  • Allowed usernames (blocking any others)

Fortress works on any version of Windows from Vista and Server 2008.

Fortress stops brute force attempts on the following software applications:

  • RDP (Remote Desktop Prototcol)
  • MS Exchange 2010, 2013, 2016
  • MS SQL Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2012, 2016
  • MySQL 5+
  • SSH

Subscription (Add on)

The Fortress app also has an add-on subscription service called: GBL (Global Blacklist).

Once purchased and enabled, Fortress downloads the GBL from our servers and creates a second Firewall block rule on your systems.

The GBL uses the network of Fortress installations across the world, to compile the list of blacklisted IPs. Added to this, Fortress uses many Honey Pots. Distributed all over the Internet, to catch automated script scanning and other black-hat techniques.

The GBL is charged at £1.00 + VAT per calender month per installation.

Once you have purchased the GBL, you will receive a licence code. This will need to be entered into the Fortress settings by either:

Manual Register
Open the Fortress GUI via the Start Menu. Enter your registered Email Address and Licence Code. Click Register.

You can then start the GBL process by clicking: Check Global Blacklist.

Automatic Register (silent)

You can then start the GBL process (silently):

FortressChecker.exe /gbl

NOTE: You can check the registered status of the install by either:

Viewing the status within the Fortress GUI


Running: FortressChecker.exe /register

NOTE: Fortress updates the GBL every 1 hour.

Manual Installation
Run the installer and follow the on screen prompts.

Automatic Installation (silent)
Fortress can pushed out by: GroupPolicy, Batch Files & other software installation packages.

Command line switch:

  • Setup.exe /S

/S, will install Fortress on the target machine without any GUIs or messages.

NOTE: Fortress requires less than 2MB of free disk space.

NOTE: Fortress does require MS Framework .NET 4.5 installed.


Fortress includes an auto update system.

If enabled in the config LINK TO CONFIG TAB.

Every 24 hours, Fortress will check to see if an update is available. If there is and it is later than the version installed, Fortress will download and install it silently.

Manual Update
Fortress can be updated manually by:

Download the update from our website, then follow the normal steps to install Fortress manually LINK or silently LINK.


Open the Fortress GUI via the Start Menu. Select Check for Updates and follow the on screen prompts


Silently: FortressChecker.exe /checkforupdates /install

When updating Fortress, you will not be able to change the installation path.

The configuration and licence files will not be overwritten when updating Fortress.

Fortress reads from the URL: for updates. So ensure this is not blocked by any proxy software.

FortressChecker.exe is installed within the Fortress installation folder.


The Fortress configuration file is stored within the Fortress installation directory.

This file should be edited via notepad or an equivalent editor.

The options within this file are:

Global Settings:
  • EnableGlobalBlacklist =True/False
  • EnableAutoUpdates = True/False
  • FailedLoginAttemptsBeforeBan = number
  • BanTime = time
  • ExpireTime = time

Application Settings:
  • EnableRDPMonitoring = True/False
  • EnableMSSQLMonitoring = True/False
  • EnableMySQLMonitoring = True/False
  • EnableAuditMonitoring = True/False
  • EnableSSHMonitoring = True/False
  • EnableExchangeMonitoring = True/False

Whitelist Settings:
  • Whitelist = IP/DNS (separated by comma)
  • WhitelistRegex = RegEx

Blacklist Settings:
  • Blacklist = IP/DNS (separated by comma)
  • BlacklistRegex = RegEx

User Settings:
  • AllowedUsernames = text


Access the Uninstall menu via the Start Menu or Add/Remove Programs.

Follow the on screen prompts. highlight test


-The Fortress service will not start (Config / Windows Security Event Log)

-Nobody is getting blocked (Firewall service running and enabled)
